Since 2017, KAAD has delivered on-campus broadcast education to the students of Dario Cassina and Sonora High Schools. KAAD mentors provide equipment, experience, and guidance on the knowledge needed to produce a radio show while also encouraging individual creativity. The most recent program at Sonora High School created the podcast Wildcat Waves, which focuses on the impact of social media on teens.
Students begin the creative process by developing a theme, determining a podcast type and delegating individual roles. Our curriculum then guides them through the recording process from the science of sound to proper speaking technique and how edit their recordings into a final product. Students learn how to use a mixing board, editing softwares such as Audacity and AI-based tools like Adobe Podcast Speech Enhancer and Transcription. This knowledge opens up a world of creative possibility for students, as one recent participant said “I’ve learned a lot about how to use Audacity and edit audio, and I think it could be helpful if I want to go into a music career in the future.”
Beyond the skills gained, the class also offers a supportive and creative community that allows students to be themselves. As a recent participant said “I think this class has really taught me how to be more open, more goofy.” Another student shared that her favorite part was “being around so many creative people, it’s been amazing talking to all of these people and making new friends.”
KAAD looks forward to returning to Sonora High School in 2025 and partnering with other schools in the area such as Summerville High School.
