In the spring of 2024, KAAD began a partnership with the Motherlode Regional Juvenile Detention Facility to teach broadcasting skills to incarcerated youth. Similar to other youth programs,  the curriculum focuses on empowering participants to tell their stories in a meaningful way. Beyond practical skills of learning how to edit audio files, speak into a microphone, and more, participants had the opportunity to express themselves by sharing music that speaks to them. The first iteration of this program was a huge success.

During the inaugural program, participants worked together to brainstorm themes to guide their radio show “Starting Over”. They proceeded to research song choices and script a meaningful introduction explaining their selection. Other basic skills taught during this program include the science of sound, how to speak into a microphone, use a mixing board,  and edit a recording. After several weeks of hard work, a special showcase was held to broadcast the final product to other residents and staff and celebrate the completed radio show.

Future sessions will explore other production formats such as interviewing, commercials, audio dramas, and storytelling.

It doesn’t stop there…

It is our vision that participants will continue to be supported and mentored through participation in KAAD Broadcasting. This ongoing partnership supports new opportunities to step away from the original peer group, limitations and old behavior patterns and create a new future free from being in the Juvenile Justice System.

In the end, it is our hope that the youth touched by this program will become a positive force in their local community and can move ahead as an asset, not a liability.
