Coming Soon to KAAD – Labor Day Specials and More!

C’est La Vie

KAAD’s “C’est La Vie” takes an unusual form: Tony Smith writes an essay in West Virginia, Sam Taylor reads it in Washington, Ellen Stewart sends out a Zoom invitation from Sonora and the three of them, all kinda old, give their aging perspectives on a variety of subjects. This week’s conversation takes up the subject of Authenticity. What does it mean to live an authentic life, what is it and how can it be achieved?

Give a listen to “C’est La Vie” at 9am this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 24th and 25th on kaad-lp, 103.5 FM .

The Local Scribe

Local writer AmyLee makes a second appearance on “The Local Scribe”, talking with host Nick Hugues about her new book of poetry, Bird With a Bright Object, which covers the gamut from Life to Grief, from Family to Ancestors.

Hear how she put this book together on “The Local Scribe”, Saturday and Sunday, August 24th and 25th at 10:30am

Vicarious Vacations

Take a Vicarious Vacation — with Maria Benech and Margaret Lawrence. They flew to Paris (baguettes!) for a week then flew to Budapest and took a river cruise (castles!) back to Amsterdam (windmills!).

“Vicarious Vacations” airs at Noon on second and fourth weekends.

Cheese Loves Wine

Lactose intolerant? Listen up!

Cheese expert Judy Creighton covers the varieties of cheeses produced by goats and sheep in her next “Cheese Loves Wine” program, airing on Saturday and Sunday, September 7th and 8th at 9am.

For a great reference, consult Judy’s book Cheese Loves Wine for hot tips on cheese, wine and nibbles pairing

Book Talk

“Book Talk” host Joy Willow chats with flautist Janet Telford about two books they’ve enjoyed. Janet describes the story of JP Morgan’s first librarian, who hid her race to become The Personal Librarian. Joy provides a fascinating description of Mining for Freedom, written by local author Sylvia Roberts, revealing untold stories of black miners in the days of the Gold Rush.

“Book Talk” airs on the first and third weekends of the month, Saturday and Sunday, September 7th and 8th and September 21st and 22nd at Noon.

Where Are They Now?

Our premiere episode of “Where Are They Now?” features former Tuolumne County residents Paul Nixon and Laurel Grindy. Paul taught English for years at Summerville and Sonora High Schools. Laurel introduced many fearful students to the wonders of Math at Columbia College.

Upon their retirements, they relocated to Green Valley on the Arizona-Mexico border. There they have become involved in Green Valley Sahuarita Samaritans, sponsored by United Church of Christ Good Shepherd Church of Sahuarita.

Listen to their inspiring story of providing assistance to desperate people seeking asylum. “Where Are They Now” will play on Saturday and Sunday, August 31st and September 1st at Noon.

A Taste of Italy

Enrico Andreatti, Sonora High exchange student from Italy, is pictured preparing traditional Labor Day picnic fare. To add a bit of flavor to the weekend, Enrico, along with his host Ron Edson, will share a medley of Italian songs for the holiday. When not curating music, Ron organizes KAAD and saves it from technological upsets – while heading up the Youth Radio wing of KAAD.

For a taste of Italian music, tune in at 12:30pm on Saturday, August 31st and Sunday, September 1st.

Happy Labor Day everyone!
